How to write your first post in Wordpress

In December I set up a blog for my Mom. I’m sure she isn’t the only one out there who’s never used Wordpress and was unsure of how to write so I decided to write this post. This post provides simple instructions on the basics of writing a post. The field you see that aren’t mentioned are fields you most likely don’t need yet and ones that I will write on in another post.

First you need to log in to Wordpress. After logging in you should be in the dashboard. From the dashboard you can click on “write a post” or you can click on “write” in the top row. No matter which one you do, the screen will open with a blank post ready to use and you will also be shown any drafts you have saved.

You’ll see a title field, put the title of your post there. If you haven’t decided on a title yet put a couple of words to remind you of the topic you’re writing about in case you have to log off suddenly or need to save as a draft.

Next you’ll see the post field. This is where you’ll write. If you’re just starting out you’ll want to write your content on the visual tab. No knowledge of code is required to write there and you can perform simple formatting directly with the provided Wordpress tools. If you use the code tab you’ll need to use html and format everything yourself.

On the right you should see a box labeled categories. In it are the available categories you can put your writing into. If you’ve just begun and don’t have categories set up yet, you can enter one in the blank field. Underneath categories you should see a box labeled discussion. As long as the box next to allow comments is checked people will be able to leave comments on your post.

Click either save, to save your post as a draft, or publish, to make your post visible to the world. Congratulations, you’ve just published your first post.
