How to save money and win a new car from Charter

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

If you live in an area where Charter offers service then you’ll want to keep reading. Charter Communications is a company that offers cable television, high speed internet and phone service. The more services you get from them the more money you save. Charter is giving a car away to one lucky winner in their Save Green, Go Green Giveaway. Anyone that signs up for one or more Charter services receives an automatic entry into the contest. The one rule of this contest is that entrants must live in an area that Charter services to be eligible to win. You have to love a contest without a bunch of rules!

The prize is a 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid car, valued at over $24,000. What a fantastic prize! With the price of gas being what it is whoever wins this car is going to save a lot of money. They’ll not only save a lot of money by not having to buy a new car but they’ll save a lot of money on gas because the car is a hybrid. This Honda gets up to 45 miles per gallon on the highway. Holy cow! I’ll spare you the engine and transmission details except for saying that it’s a 4 cylinder so it gets great gas mileage. Instead I’ll tell you that it’s got a 160 watt sound system with a built in usb audio interface/mp3 player input. Why is that important? Well, since you won’t have to make payments on the car and since you’ll be saving a fortune on gas, you’ll actually be able to take a drive and listen to some music without worrying about how to afford the gas.

This contest is a win-win situation for you because you can save money with Charter’s packages and by spending less on gas. The planet wins because a hybrid car is better for the environment, which is good for everyone. I wish I lived in a Charter area.

Machspeed Trio giveaway

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

The internet is one of the first places people look for answers, if not THE first place. Toshiba sponsors a terrific forum at www.laptopexperts.net where people can go to find (or give) help getting answers for those tough laptop related questions. The really great thing about the Laptop Experts forum is that it’s open to questions about all laptops, no matter what make, model or manufacturer they may be. To support the forum, I’m holding a giveaway with the help of M80. Five winners will each receive a Machspeed Trio 2 GB MP3 Player with Voice Recorder & Thumb Drive.

From the Amazon.com Product Description
“With a convenient size and shape that resembles a typical USB jump drive, this handy Machspeed Trio MP3 player features 2 GB of built-in flash memory. The player plugs directly into your PC’s USB port, and the USB 2.0 support ensures file transfers will be ultra-fast. The Machspeed Trio’s handy shape allows it to be easily stored in a shirt or pants pocket, an added bonus for those who like to take music along on bus rides or during exercise. In addition to storing music files for audio playback, the player features a mass storage mode to store a variety of different files. Ideal for use in school or at work, the player’s voice recording mode can capture important lectures, business meetings, and personal journal notes. The built-in backlit LCD screen displays song title, album, and artist information while playing MP3 and WMA music files. The player requires one AAA battery for playback (included).”

What’s In The Box
MP3 player, earphones, and AAA battery.

How to enter

To enter post a question about laptops along with your name and email in the widget below and then leave me a comment on this post telling me what your question was. That’s all you need to do to enter. Questions asked through the widget will go directly to the Toshiba Ask A Laptop Expert site. If your question gets answered, you’ll get an email letting you know. The contest will end on Thursday 10/09/08. Comments that don’t contain the required information will not be eligible. Winners will be selected at random. Good luck to all who enter.

EDIT - THE WIDGET IS MISBEHAVING, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR QUESTIONS DIRECTLY ON THE FORUM AND LEAVE A COMMENT HERE STATING WHAT THE QUESTION YOU ASKED WAS. THANKS. SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

Now you know that no contest is a contest without a little bit of legalese. Here it is.

Common terms

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

I try to keep things simple and easy to understand on this blog. I’m not highly technical and I know a lot of other people aren’t either. Recently I received a couple of emails recently asking for simple explanations of some common computer terms. I’ll do my best to help.

Shortcut menu - the little menu that pops up when you right click on something

ScreenTip - When activated, if you point to an item in a dialog box a message will pop up telling you what the item is.

Mail merge - A time saving way of combining a list with a form, letter or envelope

Dialog box - A window that opens and requires a response to a question on how to proceed in order to close.

WYSIWYG - This is pronounced wiz-e-wig and stands for what you see is what you get.

I hope that answers your questions!

Fuelmyblog and Tsheets contest

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Fuelmyblog and Tsheets.com want to know what people do in the first five minutes of their working day. One lucky person who answers this question on their blog will win an 80Gb iPod Classic or an 8Gb Nano.

You probably know Fuelmyblog as one of the most popular online blogger communities. TSheets is an affordable monthly service that offers a web-based timesheet system created to track hourly time from any computer or mobile device. The Tsheets website is well laid out and easy to understand. To use their language, it’s Triffic.

So, they want to know what I do in the first five minutes of my working day. I get up on a work day at 4am. I usually begin work at my day job at 6am. When I get to work the first thing I do is clock in. Then I go into the office and turn on my computer. Then I put the radio up on top of bookshelf on top of my desk (the only place I get reception) and turn it on. I open Outlook first and then the different apps and folders that I use all day. Then I go into the kitchen and make a pot of coffee. Then I go back to my desk and check my voicemail and email. By then almost ten minutes has gone by and I need that coffee. So, there you have it. That’s what I do in the first five minutes of my working day.

What do you do in the beginning of your work day?

Computer Chit Chat Bloggy Giveaways winner

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Rather than take a screenshot of everyone’s names and email addresses, I pasted everyone into a spreadsheet and assigned everyone a number. Then I went to random.org and randomized the list of numbers. Then I took the winning number, in this case #8, and checked the spreadsheet to see who it was. I’ve added a screenshot of the randomized page showing the winning number.

The winner, #8, is Renee, from strokesofmagic.blogspot.com. Renee is receiving one year of Hosting! It is shared hosting with Surpass Hosting (whom I LOVE), and it’s called the Power Plan. Renee’s comment was “The features that caught my eye, were shopping cart and image gallery. Thanks for the chance to win hosting!”. Stop by Renee’s blog and congratulate her on winning. Renee, please email me within 72 hours to confirm you wish to accept the prize.
