How to host multiple domains on a shared hosting account in cpanel

Friday, January 4th, 2008

A number of bloggers have more than one blog. Now when I first got a domain I thought all domains were hosted individually. Silly me. When I chose my webhost, Surpass Hosting, I found out that you can host multiple domains on one account. I currently have several blogs hosted on one shared domain, accessible from one control panel. It’s fairly simple to set up.

This howto is geared for someone whose hosting provides cpanel access. Presume you have one domain which is myfirstdomain.com and that your second domain is myseconddomain.com. At your domain registrar, set your nameservers for myseconddomain.com to whatever your nameservers for myfirstdomain.com are. Now log into your cpanel and go to the domains section and click add on domains. Enter myseconddomain.com as the domain name you want to add, and fill in the password fields. Click add domain. Now click go back and you’ll see an area that says modify add on domain. Next to the domain name you’ve just added click manage redirection. Delete everything in the field shown and click save. All done. Now, when you go into your public_html directory, you will see a new folder just for your myseconddomain.com. You are now hosting two domains on one shared account. That means your second site is visible both at myseconddomain.com and myseconddomain.myfirstdomain.com. That’s all there is to it.

SUE!

Sue has won the Computer Chit Chat Christmas Contest.

Each contestant’s entries were placed into the list randomizer on random.org and Sue was drawn as the winner by random selection. I’m posting a picture of the screenshot that shows then entries, and of course the winner is on the top of the list. Four people were ineligible because they didn’t subscribe or they didn’t confirm their subscription.

The prize is a new available domain registered at Godaddy and a year of Power plan hosting at Surpass Hosting.

Sue, please email me to let me know what domain name you’d like so I can start taking care of getting things set up.

Congratulations Sue!
Thanks to all who participated in our first contest.
It’s been a fun experience.
I will be holding more contests in the future so please stay subscribed.

Been thinking about moving off of a free blog onto your own domain? Maybe you’ve been considering starting another blog? Maybe you’ve never blogged before but decided you want to try it. If any of those describe you, then this contest is just for you.

I’m having this contest with bloggers in mind. The contest begins today and will end at 11:59pm est Sunday 12/30/07. The winner will be selected at random and announced on 12/31/07. To enter all you need to do is subscribe to the email feed for this blog and comment this post. Easy stuff. You’re probably wondering what the prize is. Well, the prize is actually two things.

The first part of the prize is a brand new domain, name of your choice. The domain name will be registered at Godaddy. Your domain can be any top level domain name of your choice on extensions such as .com, .net, .info, .biz, .org, .us, .name, as long as it’s currently available and costs less than $9.99.

The second part of the prize is a year of hosting. The hosting is the Power plan from Surpass Hosting. It is shared hosting. It includes 200 gb disk space, 2,000 gb of monthly bandwidth, up to 10 add on domains and lots of other features.

Good luck!

Matt at Contest Beat has been kind enough to list this contest on his site. If you hurry and visit him at ContestBeat.com before midnight on Christmas Eve you could win a wii.

Laura Williams of Laura Williams Musings has also been kind enough to list this contest in her Sunday edition of Contests Galore. Wow, she must spend hours finding and listing those, there’s a lot of them that she writes about all in one day!

THIS POST WILL REMAIN STICKY UNTIL THE CONTEST IS OVER.
